چکیده
Abstract Aims Root hairs are important for uptake, especially nutrients with low mobility in soils high sorption capacity. Mutants defective root expected to have lower nutrient unless they compensate more growth. Since can also contribute the plant's water uptake their importance could change over course of a growing season. It was our objective investigate role under field conditions. Methods The hair mutant rth3 Zea mays and corresponding wild-type were grown two years conditions on sand loam. Results Shoot growth P K plants promoted by presence at all stages. Differences between genotypes greater loam than until tassel emergence, presumably as additional exploitation is relevant Compensation absence increased not observed absolute terms. shoot ratio higher wild-type. traits showed plasticity response texture, most salient being mean diameter sand, irrespective genotype. mechanism causing increase still unknown. length density which be explained need exploration this substrate. Conclusion confirmed large impact texture consequences carbon balance require further investigations.

A dynamic model of nutrient uptake by root hairs.
Root hairs are known to be important in the uptake of sparingly soluble nutrients by plants, but quantitative understanding of their role in this is weak. This limits, for example, the breeding of more nutrient-efficient crop genotypes. We developed a mathematical model of nutrient transport and uptake in the root hair zone of single roots growing in soil or solution culture. Accounting for roo...
متن کاملStimulated fine root growth benefits maize nutrient uptake under optimized nitrogen management
Optimized nitrogen (N) management reduces total N application without sacrificing cropyield. However, the underlining mechanisms have not been well investigated, especially lackingthe evidence from roots. Here we performed a two-year field experiment with maize grownunder zero-N, conventional N and optimized N applications and examined grain yield, N,phosphorous (P) and potassium (K) uptake and...
متن کاملChemical root to shoot signaling under drought.
Chemical signals are important for plant adaptation to water stress. As soils become dry, root-sourced signals are transported via the xylem to leaves and result in reduced water loss and decreased leaf growth. The presence of chemical signals in xylem sap is accepted, but the identity of these signals is controversial. Abscisic acid (ABA), pH, cytokinins, a precursor of ethylene, malate and ot...
متن کاملNutrient Uptake by Woody Root Systems
The fine-root system of perennial, dicot woody species can be dominated by brown roots. Although as much as 90% of the surface area of a root system can be in this category of roots, the nutrient uptake characteristics of brown roots are not well understood. If this part of the root system has active uptake, then its significance is obvious. If it does not then modelling predictions of nutrient...
متن کاملEffects of potassium on temporal growth of root and shoot of wheat and its uptake in different soils
In a pot culture experiment, the root length density, potassium concentration in crop, and total K uptake by wheat (Triticum aestivum var. HD 2285) at different growth stages (CRIS-Crown Root Initiation Stage, MTS-Maximum Tillering Stage, FLS-Flag Leaf Stage and DFS-Dough Formation Stage) were determined. Wheat crop was grown in 72 pots containing 4.5 kg of three types of soils, namely Alfisol,...
